Using utensils, scissors, writing, buttoning, zippering and tying shoes are all examples that require use of ones hands. Coordination, strength, manipulation, and dexterity are areas an OT looks at hand skills.

Hand development and writing readiness are needed to enable age appropriate handwriting. Strengthening, coordination, manipulation and scissor use are examples of readiness skills.

Deficits in handwriting skills include poor letter formation, legibility, spacing and organization on paper as well as poor pencil grasp.
